MAX is a joint effort of area religious organizations to give monetary support to persons in the community who have emergency financial needs. MAX provides a systematic way to verify needs and provides a central location for persons seeking assistance. MAX also works with AmerenIP to distribute the funding through the "Warm Neighbors, Cool Friends Program," which assists persons with payment of their winter power bills. Thousands of families in Macon County have been helped through this program since 1996.
Volunteers assist applicants with needed information on the applications. A screening committee of dedicated volunteers reviews the applications and makes appropriate decisions and grants requests up to $300. The MAX Coordinator will let those who cannot be helped know via a letter. Checks to vendors or landlords will be issued when a request is approved. The Coordinator also works with other service providers, making referrals and sharing other agency services with applicants.
